Health Benefits of Chillies

They say that dynamite comes in small packages, and this could not be truer of the little capsicum, the chilli. Coming in a variety of sizes, colours, and more importantly, strength of heat. A chilli is more than a pretty addition to ones garden. This little chap packs a punch not only in heat, but in what it can do for your body. The health benefits of chillies are surprisingly large in number, but what are the actual benefits which make the inevitable burn worthwhile?

A Healthy Burn

Chillies are used to add flavour to food, whether you like a little burn or heat which causes your nose to run, their flavour can enhance the taste. The compound capsaicin, found in chillies, not only gives it its distinctive taste, but also gives it many health benefits.

Contrary to what one might think the compounds found in chillies don’t irritate the stomach, rather they work to improve gut health by soothing the stomach and easing digestive issues.  They also promote weight loss by increasing the metabolism and the rate at which your body burns fat.

The Little Fighter

This little gem of a fruit has anti-inflammatory properties which help to relieve pain associated with arthritis, joint pain, migraines and symptoms related to cold and flu. The Vitamin C in chilli helps to build immunity and fight infection and the Vitamin A is vital to maintain healthy urinary, respiratory and intestinal systems.

Due mainly to its anti-inflammatory properties and high antioxidant content, it is able to kill certain cancer cells. It also helps to lower blood sugar levels and stabilise insulin. Other benefits include keeping your skin and hair healthy by maintaining collagen levels, the Vitamin A helps to keep your eyes strong and healthy and due to the folic acid, copper and iron it contains, it helps to maintain bone health by building healthy red blood cells which prevents anaemia and fatigue.

The tasty chilli will not only enhance your meal but help you to live a healthy lifestyle. Chop it into your stir fries or drop it to your casserole, sprinkle it over a salad or add it in the form of a condiment such as the Reivilo – Curry Chilli Relish, Reivilo – IBO Mozambican Hot Sauce or Pesto Princess – Harissa, found amongst the condiments and spreads at Wildsprout.
